NotebookLM — Google's Free AI Study Assistant for Teachers
Upload your teaching materials — PDFs, websites, YouTube videos — and AI generates summaries, notes, and outlines. Works in Hong Kong.
What is NotebookLM?
NotebookLM is Google's AI notebook tool designed for research and learning. You upload your sources (PDFs, web pages, YouTube videos) and it answers questions based only on your uploaded materials. No hallucination from random internet data.
This is crucial for teachers: the AI stays grounded in your curriculum materials.
How Teachers Use It
1. Lesson Prep: Documents → Notes
Upload EDB curriculum guides or textbook PDFs and ask:
- "Summarize this chapter in 5 bullet points"
- "Extract key vocabulary with definitions"
- "Create a lesson outline from this document"
2. Quiz Creation: Curriculum-Aligned
Since it only uses your materials, questions are guaranteed to match your teaching:
- "Create 5 quiz questions from chapter 3"
- "Generate discussion questions for group work"
3. Research: Multiple Sources
Put several related PDFs in one notebook and ask it to compare and contrast different viewpoints.
Free Tier Enough?
Yes. Each notebook can hold up to 50 sources, each source up to 500 pages. More than enough for any teacher's lesson prep needs.
Hong Kong Access
✅ Works directly. Visit notebooklm.google.com and sign in with your Google account. No VPN needed.
Tips
- English works best: While it supports Chinese, analysis is more accurate with English sources. You can ask for answers in Chinese.
- Audio Overview: Try the podcast-style audio generation feature — great for flipped classrooms. Students can listen to AI-generated discussions about the lesson content.
Bottom line: Free, works in Hong Kong, uses only your materials. If you prepare lessons with lots of documents, NotebookLM is essential.
