What Should We Teach Students in the AI Era?
AI capabilities are doubling roughly every 7 months. In four years, we've gone from "toy" to "can do most white-collar work." How do we prepare students for this?
The reality: AI isn't the future, it's now
Research shows AI's task-completion ability roughly doubles every 7 months:
- 2022: ChatGPT 3.5 — toy-grade, answered simple questions
- 2024: AI good enough that many stopped using Google Search
- 2026 (now): Agentic AI — doesn't just answer, it does things. Book flights, write apps, do analysis — all autonomously
The impact is already visible: US graduate unemployment has risen from 4% to 6%, steadily climbing. The reason is straightforward — companies are discovering that AI can do entry-level work faster and cheaper.
What's wrong with the old model?
Our education system was built to produce "process followers":
- Memorize facts → AI remembers a billion times more
- Follow procedures → AI is best at following procedures
- Rote learning → you can access all human knowledge from your phone
If procedural skills become less valuable, what should we teach instead?
Skills to focus on
1. Defining problems, not just finding answers
AI is great at giving answers, but you need to ask the right questions:
- "What problem am I trying to solve?"
- "How do I clearly communicate this to AI?"
- "What assumptions does this answer make? Is there missing information?"
2. Foundations still matter
- Reading & writing — clear self-expression
- Math & logic — structured thinking, probability, causality
- Domain knowledge — without it, you can't judge if an answer is right
3. Soft skills as the ultimate advantage
- Communication — storytelling, persuasion, clarity
- Leadership — doing the things only humans can do
- Creativity — deciding what to build, not just building it
- Resilience — the most important one. The world changes fast; the ability to re-learn and re-invent matters more than any single skill
In the classroom: what teachers can do
Don't ban AI completely
Banning AI is like teaching swimming without letting students in the water. Their world will have AI — we need to teach them to use it well.
But don't let them use it unchecked
If every assignment is copy-pasted from AI, there's no learning. The key is balance: use AI as a tool, but students still need to understand the concepts.
Teach questioning
Design activities where students criticise an AI's output — find errors, bias, missing context. That's more valuable than memorising answers.
A positive note
AI brings a huge opportunity: it dramatically lowers the barrier to making things real.
One person + AI can now do what used to take a whole team. Students can start creating earlier, without needing to master coding, design, and marketing first.
